The 8280-481 is a high voltage (90 to 150 Vdc) controller that is one of the Woodward 723PLUS analog load sharing digital speed control units designed for low-speed engines. Low-speed engines are those rated at 130 rpm or less. The low-speed controller is also available in low-pressure versions, as well as high and low pressure options for high-speed engines.
Control options for the 8280-481 include:
Magnetic pickup (minimum 400 Hz magnetic pickup frequency)
Approach switch input (speed signal frequency less than 1000 Hz)
4-20 or 0-200 mA actuator output
0-1 or 4-20 mA analog output
Series actuator output
Two serial ports and an LON channel provide a variety of communication options, including external Modbus compatible devices, Woodward LinkNet I/O nodes, ServLink devices (for clients such as monitoring Windows and control views), and Woodward Handheld programmers (part 9907-205).

The 8280-481 uses a sheet metal chassis and is suitable for use in hazardous locations, but precautions still need to be taken when selecting a location for the 723PLUS speed control. Hardware is vulnerable to electromagnetic interference and should be protected from high voltage and high current devices. It should also be protected from vibration and direct exposure to water (including environments prone to condensation) and should be installed in a location that maintains adequate ventilation and a temperature range of -40 to +70 °C during operation. Manual 02879 has additional safety precautions that should be consulted before choosing where to install this control.
